I hadn’t thought about Licorice Pizza in forever.
They were one of several now-defunct chains in LA that included Music+ and others I can’t remember. Looking at this photo, I can almost smell that odd L.A. mix of eucalyptus and car exhaust baking in the blazing, shadowless smoggy sunlight.
In addition to the Sunset Strip, you’d find them in most malls. We used to shop at smaller stores for obscure imports with our cool friends but whenever the family went for a drive, we’d drop in to one of these for all our dirty top 40 needs.
[That double bill of 5th Dimension & Deodato sounds like a swingin’ good time, too.]
