[That last GIF “Why?” = game over. My mom sang this to me as a kid because I was the darkest one in my family. Mixed families are common in Latin America but Mexicans don’t often embrace the black branch of their family tree. My family identifies deeply with our Mayan roots, but we’ve always celebrated our Afro-Cuban and Arab ties (holiday dinners were quite a treat in our house). My mom did me a great favor drilling that question “why” into my head, one lullaby at a time. The version I remember best was by often overlooked Afro-Mexican bolero diva, Toña La Negra [http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/To%25C3%25B1a_la_Negra]. Eartha nails it, of course, and Cat Power did a cover that was kind of choppy, but my Pavlovian love for this song is such that anyone who keeps this song and question alive wins me over instantly. - mediajorge]

CLINT STEWART - WARPAINT EP
[SECOND STATE: SNDST003]
A: Clint Stewart - Warpaint feat. Tone Of Arc
B: Clint Stewart, Marceille - Look Into The Sun
For Clint’s debut solo EP, there was no better way to make his mark than to bring on one of his closest friends and all around musical visionaries, Tone Of Arc. Warpaint is a cry from the depths of the human spirit to the world outside. A dark and sensual musical journey teeming with emotional howls washed over a relentless beat and sub bass with deep celestial vocals that will make every hair on your body stand straight up. It’s the track you won’t forget the minute you hear it and the one you will be reliving over and over from that moment on.
Look Into The Sun is a heart melter. It’s the sound of summer. It’s the sound of any day where the sun shines down kissing the skin of a sea of people dancing in euphoric unison to the warm piano stabs as they build into a dreamy progression while small flashes of a warm vocal wash over you. Once the breakdown comes, the words “look into the sun” come as if in a dream to introduce a mesmerizing sub bass and a splash of enchanted synths. With all the magical harmony and melody of ‘Look Into The Sun’, the ever rolling beat ties it all together. Whether on a beach, a boat, an open air or watching the sunrise through the crack in a window of a dark club, this will bring the warmth of the sun down on you. Good thing it’s always summer somewhere.
